I found this reading super interesting. It kind of shocked me that internet art had its start up in Europe when in my brain the internet is such an American invention. The internet being the host for art is a very interesting concept for the sole reason that nothing can be permanent in this format. Just thinking about the amount of lost art and media that happened just in 2020 with the sweep and removal of flash, what else is lost to time? As well, it’s interesting how the internet in the corporate art world has fallen into this specific aesthetic. That overtime art over the internet in the mainstream has this flat user-friendly concept, compared to the Wild West of websites in the late 1990s. With how streamlined these current designs are I wonder what direction internet art will take in the future. Will it get only more simple and corporate or bring back the ideals of design from the 90s? Also, with the prices to own websites being far too high or the creation of sites being taken over by companies like SquareSpace or Wix can internet art stay independent? Similarly, how has the internet changed only in the last two years with how we understand online art with the creation of services like AI? Will this creation move or scare artists off from this art form entirely with the new fear of their creations being stolen?
